These nests can get quite large late in the season, and adult wasps will readily sting if they sense danger approaching. It’s pretty typical for the queen to be the only one to survive a long winter. The location of the sting will become red and swollen. During this life cycle, worker wasps assist with feeding the young as well as building and defending the nest. Paper wasp stings can be very painful and can cause the same risk of allergic reaction as other insect stings.
